Howard D. Baker
Undergraduate Research Talks and Awards Luncheon
The Department of Psychology is pleased to announce the Howard D. Baker Undergraduate Research Talks and Awards Luncheon. The award is presented annually to the undergraduate whose research project submission is judged to be the most meritorious by the Psychology Undergraduate Studies Committee.
The recipient of the award receives $300 and the student's name is
engraved on a plaque located prominently in the Psychology Department. The second place winner receives $200, and the third place winner receives $100. Importantly, all presenters receive recognition by the entire Psychology faculty, and all acquire important professional experience that can help prepare them for graduate school and future careers.
The award is named for Professor Howard D. Baker who, in 1991,
retired after 41 years of teaching in the Department of Psychology. Professor
Baker was widely recognized as a master teacher, prolific researcher, and
a dedicated and gifted mentor to young researchers.
To present a Howard Baker Research Talk, the student must:
1. Be an undergraduate in good academic standing. Non-majors who are working in
a psychology lab are strongly encouraged to present their research for both the
professional experience and recognition, even though only psychology majors will
qualify for a cash award.
2. Complete a research project supervised by a full-time psychology faculty member.
3. Submit FIVE
copies of an APA-style paper, which includes abstract, review of previous research, description of methods/procedures, primary analyses & results, and a brief discussion of results and implications. The text must be no more than 15 pages in length (not including tables and references); font size must be no smaller than 12 point; all four margins must be one inch. SUBMISSIONS THAT DO
NOT COMPLY WITH THESE REQUIREMENTS OR THAT ARE SUBMITTED LATE
WILL NOT BE EVALUATED.
4. Submit a letter of endorsement from the faculty sponsor. Students should instruct their faculty sponsor to give them a printed copy of the letter in a sealed envelope so that the student can include the letter along with their paper.
Papers and letters of endorsement are due Monday, April 9th in room A209 PDB, by 12 noon. The Psychology Undergraduate Studies Committee evaluates the papers and selects the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
**Panama City Campus students who wish to present a Howard Baker talk and/or compete for the awards must submit 5 copies of their papers and a letter of endorsement from their faculty supervisor via USPS or Campus mail to the Psychology Advising Office on the Tallahassee campus well before the deadline to ensure consideration. Send to: Psychology Department Advising Office, 1107 W. Call St., Tallahassee, FL 32306.
